It's Letter Time! - Hair products that don't run over R30 ($4.28) in Cape Town

Check out what this reader had to say:
"I was referred to your blog from a post on a thread I started on Long Hair Care Forum (http://www.longhaircareforum.com/hair-care-tips-product-review-discussion/517279-going-cape-town-sa-6-months-i-need-hair-help-stat.html).  I've been in Cape Town for a week so far and will be here until mid June.  I'm having trouble finding hair products that don't run over R30 for a small bottle.  Specifically I am trying to find shea butter, braid spray, a deep conditioner, and a sulfate free shampoo.  I live in Observatory and if you can give any tips as to where I should start it would be greatly appreciated."

Thanks for reading,
Sarah
Sarah, I'm going to do my best to give you all the information you asked for and more. My only wish was that you had contacted me before you even left the states. I want you to know that at the current exchange rate, R30 is $4.28. That is super cheap so some things will be above the amount you requested. No worries! I'm sure you'll find that you have spent more than $5.00 on a few of your hair products. You live in the Southern Suburbs of Cape Town and there are plenty of products that could work for you. I had a really great time 'shopping' around for you and this is what I found. I decided that I should do my best to make everything a one stop shop.  I've added all the logos of the shops so that you will recognize them.

I went to Cavendish Square Shopping Center in Claremont to check out my two favorite pharmacies Dischem and Clicks. They are next door to each other in this shopping center.

Sulfate Free Shampoo

  • Hair One Cleanser and Condition Cucumber Aloe (Normal) Sulfate Free 12oz. (355ml) R39.95 ($5.70) - DISCHEM
  • R9.95 above what you wanted to spend, but I am pretty sure that you wont find another sulfate free shampoo in the area unless you make it yourself.
  • I've heard lots of chatter on hair boards and other blogs about this product. It seems to be really great. Give it a try!

  • TRESemme' Naturals Nourishing Moisture Shampoo Lower Sulfate 25oz (750ml)    R59.95 ($8.56) - DISCHEM
  • This is not exactly sulfate free, but they claim to have lower sulfates. I would still dilute this shampoo with water in a bottle before applying if your really anti-sulfate.
  • I have used a lot of TRESemmes' products and I like them when their aren't other options around.

Deep Conditioners

  • TRESemme' Naturals Silicone Free Conditioner For Dry Damaged Hair 25oz (750ml) R59.95 ($8.56) - DISCHEM
  • I would add Olive Oil or Coconut Oil to this conditioner for added benefit

  • Freeman Papaya and Mango Moisture 3 minute Conditioner 6oz (150ml) R49.95 ($7.13) - DISCHEM
  • I haven't used this conditioner, but it smells absolutely divine. I would also add some oils this one.

  • Dr Miracles Deep Conditioning Treatment Packets 1.75oz in regular and Super Strength R15.99 ($2.28) - CLICKS
  • It honestly seems like a bootleg version of ORS Replenishing Packs. Unfortunately, I could only find those packs in a relaxer box. Anyway, I'm sure Dr. Miracles gets the job done.

  • ORS Olive Oil Replenishing Conditioner 12.25oz (370ml) R59.99 ($8.57) - CLICKS
  • I use this and I swear by it. It's a mild protein deep conditioner. I also add coconut oil to this entire bottle. My hair loves every bit of it.

  • Motions CPR Treatment Conditioner 250g R34.99 ($4.99) - CLICKS
  • I've never used this product, but the hair boards were on fire about it a while back. They have changed their packaging but hopefully not their ingredients.
Shea Butter
  • ORS Shea Butter Softening Hair and Scalp Lotion 9oz (266ml) R69.99 ($9.99) - CLICKS
  • Shea Butter is the 7th ingredient in. I know this is not what you were looking for, but I had the hardest time finding someone on the street selling the raw stuff. It's hit or miss and I definitely missed today.
  • I've used the product in the past. I like to use this when I'm braiding my hair up for a sew in weave. My hair stays moisturized for a very long time.

Braid Spray
  • Soft Sheen Carson Restore Plus Moisturizing Braid Spray 250ml R25.95 ($3.70) - DISCHEM
  • I actually have this bottle of braid spray in the house. I used it when I had my sew in weave to moisturize and seal once a week. I don't recall being crazy about it, but it got the job done.
  • I confess that I know nothing about braid sprays. I need to do some research on this.
  • Sunsilk Anti-Dandruff Braid & Scalp Spray 250ml R18.99 ($2.71) - ON SALE @ CLICKS
  • Unfortunately I could not find a picture of this anywhere, and I forgot to snap it at the store. It comes in a blue spray bottle and it's on sale. WooHoo!

Sarah, this is what I came up with and I hope it is helpful. Let the readers know how the shopping went and what worked for you. I wish you the best of luck!
